Grapecott March Heads for Border
About 500 farm workers begin an eight day march from Coachella Valley toward the Mexico border to back a boycott of California grapes. Led by United Farm Workers Organizing Committee and Cesar Chavez aide Jim Drake, the protest aims to unite workers on both sides and oppose use of green card labor as strikebreakers. The group will stop at a Safe Way store in Coachella and later in Mecca before proceeding toward the border. Chavez may join along the way or at the border.

Oil Spill Cleanup Bill Faces Senate Hurdles
Sen. Edmund S. Muskie said his Senate subcommittee is stalled on a bill requiring oil and shipping firms to pay cleanup costs. The plan would impose rules on dredgers and require reimbursement to the federal government for spills, with two days of hearings planned to decide if insurers can cover cleanup liabilities. House action on a similar measure has already passed.

Caltech Experts Foresee Earthquake Control Prospects
California Institute of Technology geophysicists forecast possible earthquake control and prevention. Dr James Brune highlighted San Gorgonio Pass as a potential major quake site while Dr Clarence Allen spoke of triggering quakes and a future national program to relieve fault strains through water injection reservoirs or underground explosions. Brune estimated a warning system could emerge in about 20 years centered on ground tilt and fault creep monitoring.
