Five homes were leveled by a gas explosion early Wednesday in San Jose. Four sleeping occupants escaped serious injury, nine people were treated for scratches and bruises and released. A vacant house fumigated for termites, with a plastic cover, was the blast site. A PG&E crew found a gas line leak near the destroyed house, suggesting an electric spark as a possible trigger.
