Fellow Astronaut Bets on Stars During Flight
A bet among 10 astronauts centered on whether Alan B. Shepard Jr would see stars during the Freedom 7 flight at 115 miles altitude in daylight. Shepard did not see constellations, so Lt. Col. John Glenn will pay a steak dinner to Cap Virgil Gus Grissom. Glenn still believes stars are visible after a brief 300 mile hop for instrument sighting.

Naval Hospital funds clash seen in Senate debate
Sen Kuchel and Sen Engle quarreled over naval hospital needs in Southern California. They cited bed space shortfalls, with an average of 576 vacant beds within 150 miles of Long Beach and the USS Haven deemed unsuitable as a hospital ship due to leaks and compromised watertight integrity. The discussion urged careful conference review and better use of service hospitals to aid personnel and dependents in the Long Beach area.
