First Moon Flight May Avoid Landing Says Von Braun
Von Braun at an American Astronautical Society conference said the first Apollo flight may not land on the moon. He noted a landing would depend on readiness of the Saturn rocket and command module and that a lunar landing could be delayed for a later flight. Meanwhile US officials suggested the Soviets may attempt a circumlunar flight next year, citing Soyuz 1 and the death of cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov.
