Stennis questions Cobra safety and grounding prospects
Sen. John Stennis chairing the preparedness subcommittee asked the Pentagon for a series of questions about the safety of the Cobra helicopter used in Vietnam. Pentagon officials said only one of seven U S Cobra accidents since July 1 1968 involved a defective tail rotor yoke and three crashes remain under investigation. The Defense Department noted no higher accident rate for Cobra than other aircraft in Vietnam. The subcommittee was told by the Army that yoke inspections have been stepped up and replacements for all yokes began this month. The Cobra cost 300000 each, with about 600 in use in Vietnam. Bell Helicopter built the helicopter and G R Machine Co Curdy Mo and Crescent Precision Products Tulsa were rotor hub subcontractors. The inquiry followed an anonymous tip about multiple crashes tied to the yoke.

Dirksen Pledges Pentagon Probe Into Costs
Senate Republican Leader Everett Dirksen said he will ask Defense Secretary Melvin Laird to assess responsibility for costly Pentagon decisions. Senators Goldwater and Murphy blamed civilian officials from the Kennedy and Johnson administrations for the C 5A cost rise from 3 billion to over 5 billion. Goldwater warned against pinning the blame on the Pentagon chiefs, and said the eight year pattern should be examined.
