Senator Joseph McCarthy, famed anti Communist crusader, dies at age 47 after a rapid decline from acute hepatitis at Naval Hospital. Spokesmen reported he worsened between 4 and 5 p.m. EDT as Catholic rites were held and colleagues visited his home. Born November 14, 1909 in Wisconsin, McCarthy rose from small-town lawyer to Senate in 1946, featuring the Wheeling speech that sparked national controversy over alleged card carrying Communists. His death comes as Capitol flags are lowered in mourning.
