Thousands flee Quang Tri City and Kontum amid North Vietnamese assaults. Ten thousand evacuated from Kontum by air to Pleiku. Hue swells to about 300,000 as refugees pour in. Front lines push toward Quang Tri City. helicopters downed and bridges blown as allied forces pull back.
President Nixon pledged to use air and sea power to stop the North Vietnamese surge in South Vietnam. He said bombing and shelling would continue as long as the offensive persists, warning that ending air and sea support could lead to a Communist takeover. The remarks followed a barbecue at John Connally’s ranch, where guests toasted the president's courage.
Gunfire killed an eight year old Roman Catholic girl and wounded seven others including a British soldier during Belfast riots. Snipers hit a soldier in Londonderry while a bus blast caused property damage with no casualties. A protest march by housewives supported the IRA's militant wing as sectarian tensions escalated across Northern Ireland.

British born actress Gia Scala Giovanna Scoglio of Liverpool and Rome origin was found dead in her Hollywood Hills home late Sunday night. Detec tives say overdose of drugs likely caused death. Scala had been confined to a state hospital for pediatric observation earlier in life. Her film credits include Don't Go Near the Water Never Say Goodbye Garment Jungle and The Guns of Navarone.
