Carson to Add 3 Patrol Cars To City Safety Plan
Carson City Council approves a traffic safety program contracting three patrol cars with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department starting May 1 funded by a state grant. In year two the city faces a 5 percent matching fund totaling 362 378 to keep the three units. Public Safety Director Carl Calkins and Sheriff’s Captain James Whealley say the fleet could generate about 110 000 annually in traffic fines, enough to cover costs even into year three when the full price is 741 for Wie three units. Calkins notes safety goals over revenue. Historical data show 1973 had 12 fatalities and 688 injuries from accidents with 8811 moving violations cited, rising to 12 162 citations and lower deaths next year.
