California panel approves reduced marijuana possession penalty
A key Assembly committee approved reducing possession of marijuana from a felony to a misdemeanor with a maximum 90 days in county jail. The bill by Assemblyman Alan Sieroty would shift marijuana charges to municipal courts, add a first offense option, and move laws to the dangerous drugs section. Critics warned it could worsen usage and leave California with lenient penalties.
