Arlington opens burials to more disabled veterans
Army Secretary Clifford Alexander announced a broad easing of Arlington National Cemetery burial eligibility. The move adds about 3 million disabled veterans and holders of top decorations to the eligible list, plus their spouses and dependent children. Space remains scarce with 149,000 buried and 100,000 new graves in recent years. full plots are projected by 2008, with a cremation columbarium planned. Eligible now are recipients of the Medal of Honor and other high decorations, active and retired personnel with disability, and certain distinguished service awards. Burial will begin April 15 for those discharged with at least 40 percent disability and other top honors such as the Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, Air Force Cross, DSM, Silver Star, and Purple Heart.
