Alaska Struggles in Debris After Quake Floods
After a major quake, a tidal surge hit Alaska towns including Valdez and Crescent City. Tanker Fights Alaskan Current Here and Fends Off Pileup
A 351-foot Santa Maria tanker was moved through Los Angeles Harbor by tugs when a strong current pushed its stern towardshore near Berth 79 at Norm's Landing. The prop-wash damaged a floating dock, sunk a 16-foot fishing boat, and disabled a boat hoist while the tanker remained undamaged. Coast Guard and harbor officials termed the incident a near fire crisis and opened an investigation.
