Senate Panel Approves Social Security Increase Plan

The Senate Finance Committee unanimously backed a minimum Social Security benefit of 200 dollars per month for individuals and 300 dollars for couples after 30 years of taxed work. The measure, costing about 110 million yearly at start and 1.4 to 1.6 billion long term, would cover roughly 340,000 retirees now and more in the future, with gradual minimums for those under 30 years of coverage. The committee did not vote on financing taxes, pending whether existing system funding suffices for larger benefits without new taxes. The House had approved 150/225 monthly minimums and a 4 percent general increase for all recipients.
