Miller Parolee Defends Self in Murder Trial and Death Penalty Push
Miller, a 33-year-old parolee, acted as his own attorney facing the death penalty. He challenged the jury to take time, admitted overwhelming guilt on first-degree murder, and warned a second-degree verdict would trigger a retrial and life imprisonment. The jury began deliberations after hearing evidence of premeditation and two killings, including the mother shot at point blank and a father wounded in the neck. Miller had earlier been convicted in 1957 of slaying an Rolling Hills infant and was paroled three months before the killings of his parents.
