U S Marine Cobra gunships collided in daylight over Da Nang base killing all four crew aboard. The crash occurred about 700 feet up near Marble Mountain air facility runway edge. The U S has lost 21 helicopters since March 10 and 301 since Jan 1.
President Nixon urged Congress to widen federal penalties for bombings including potential death sentences. Proposals would criminalize possession or use of explosives to damage federal property or interstate targets, with severe fines and long prison terms. The plan aims to curb anarchic violence and extend federal reach beyond current laws.
Tornadoes struck the central states causing heavy property damage. Eight storms surged from the Rocky Mountains into the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys with several twisters touching down near Newport Arkansas and in towns like Corning Piggott and Walnut Ridge.
