Four Hours of Hell as Tanks Attack A Shau Ambush
A UPI report describes a 200 strong U S 1st Cavalry Division unit in the A Shau Valley near the Laotian frontier enduring a four hour ambush by North Vietnamese tanks. Casualties were moderate as the company fought from a ravine to hillside cover, calling for reinforcements and evacuations amid heavy rifle and machine gun fire. A medic and a lieutenant were wounded, and the unit eventually withdrew to a landing zone under helicopter support.
