Nine Americans killed by land mine near Da Nang

Saigon reports a Communist mine destroyed an armored vehicle southeast of Da Nang on Thursday, killing nine American soldiers. In Saigon two explosions wounded five children. A rescue helicopter pilot from Oklahoma led a mission to retrieve Maj. Gen. Lloyd Ramsey and five others from a helicopter crash, with two men killed. Ramsey, commander of Americal Division, survived with a broken arm. American deaths in Vietnam last week reached 101, the second 100-plus week this year.

Hundreds Flee Dixie Floodwaters After Torrential Rain

Nationwide floods across Alabama drove hundreds from homes as a child drowned in Anniston and two truckers died in slick wrecks. National Guard assisted evacuations in Birmingham Tuscaloosa and Florence with about 800 people in shelters in Birmingham. About 230 children rescued from a school second floor by boat and Army trench.

West German Chancellor Willy Brandt met East German Premier Willi Stoph in Erfurt marking the first such face to face encounter. Ahlers called talks useful and factual and a Kassel meeting set for May 21 as a step toward easing division.

Curtis Tate Nominated Selective Service Chief

Curtis Tate won quick committee approval as the new Selective Service chief after endorsing an end to college deferments and pledging the draft would not punish antiwar demonstrators. He testified for about an hour before the Senate Armed Services Committee before his nomination goes to the full Senate. He supported an all volunteer force but warned manpower could require conscription if volunteers fell short. He also said he was not afraid of an all black force. Separate events included Edward Teller declining to address protesters at Rutgers and Princeton on separate days. Former California Governor Goodwin Knight remained in "fine" condition at St Joseph Hospital in Burbank amid illness.
