Minister Kills Bandit After Shooting Friend in Firefight
In a swift confrontation in Sellersburg, minister Gingery shot and killed a bandit who had robbed a bank and injured a friend. The gunman fled after taking $1,655 in cash as authorities closed in and a police car halted the escape. Watts, a quiet family man and pastor’s ally, had joined Gingery’s pursuit and was slain in the exchange. The minister’s aide Hassett, a GE employee from Erie, Pennsylvania, was also killed, his father lamenting the tragedy and blaming marital strife for his son’s death. The Bur mill border region tension and the minister’s sudden seclusion followed the dramatic events.
