Training of 12 to 17 year olds for recruitment and advancement in the Naval Reserve was discussed at a United States Navy League meeting led by retired Rear Adm. William J. Catlett. The Long Beach council hosted at Los Alamitos Center, with officials from Sea Cadet units across the Navy List District in attendance. Catlett outlined cadet training’s educational role and preparation for future career opportunities, noting 42 officer programs and about 70 enlisted rates. The Long Beach corps, winner of top national honors for 16 years, will be inspected this year by Capt. Warren Hall Jr. on March 31 at Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station.

Torrance Youths Face Girl Charge
Two Torrance area youths were arraigned in San Pedro on kidnapping and rape charges for the alleged abduction and attack of a 19 year-old Long Beach girl Sunday night. Raymond Childrey and Komer West, both held on $10,000 bail, appeared before Judge Howard Crandall who set a preliminary hearing for next Tuesday. The alleged crime occurred when the girl was forced into their car in front of the San Pedro YMCA, with her screams drawing police attention and a car chase that ended with the vehicle halted.

Bar Brawl Slayer Is Sentenced In Bar Fight
Billy Mack Evans a 30 year old San Pedro man with a history of violence was sentenced to state prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the July 2 slaying of Robert Stickler during a bar fight. Superior Court Judge Max Evans imposed a 6 months to 10 year term after ruling the killing involuntary. Stickler 43 of Olive Avenue died after being struck outside a bar. Evans was also jailed on assaulting his wife but the charge was dismissed as he received the prison term.
