National fishermen filed a federal pollution suit in New Orleans seeking 79 million in damages from Chevron Oil Co for an oil slick that split and circled the Migratory Bird island home. Two thousand fishermen join in the action while oyster fleets pursue 91.5 million in a similar suit.
Actress Jane Fonda filed a federal suit with the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington seeking to strike down a military code provision allowing civilians to be expelled from open posts. Fonda, linked with pacifist protests, said an Oscar nomination may be affected by her antiwar activities.
SAIGON US troops battled Communist units for a second day near Black Virgin Mountain northwest of Saigon. The 25th Infantry Division reported two killed and zero wounded in clashes at the border region, while TLS announced three American planes lost in Laos during ground support and 352 raids over the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
The Vatican proposed on Monday that sex education be added to the training for Roman Catholic priests to better prepare them for a life of celibacy. The 15,000 word document outlined sweeping reforms in priestly training over four centuries and made no allowance for marriage.
Governor Lester Maddox announced Monday he will run for lieutenant governor in this year’s elections. He indicated plans to stay in the Democratic primary but left open switching parties if Republicans convince him it would benefit Georgia. Vice President Agnew called Chicago Mayor Daley to deny reports that President Nixon criticized the city’s handling of French President Pompidou’s visit. About 10,000 demonstrators welcomed Pompidou during his Chicago visit two weeks earlier.
