Gigi the gray whale freed near Point Loma by SeaWorld and Navy researchers faces slim survival odds. Marine scientist Dr. Theodore Walker denounced the release as cruel and ignorant, saying the 7 week old captive has never known deep water and is ill-prepared for life in the open sea. A radio tag shows no contact since Tuesday as researchers resume tracking with a helicopter, hoping to locate the 6 ton animal that wandered 20 miles offshore in confusion.

UCLA tests system to cut elevator hazards in quakes
