Easier to Steal Planes Than Cars, Long Beach Officials Say
Aviation and police officials in Long Beach warn that small planes are easier to steal than cars due to open hangars, flimsy locks, and sometimes unattended aircraft. Since 1953, five planes have been stolen in Long Beach, with the latest last Saturday. Authorities note limited manpower, gaps in fencing, and the challenge of distinguishing prowlers from visitors at the airport.

Ship Firm Raises Hawaii Freight Rates 10 Percent
Mat son Navigation Co. will boost Hawaii mainland freight rates by 10 percent effective April 15. Randolph Sevier, president, testified before a Senate commerce subcommittee in Washington and said the tariff would be filed with the Federal Maritime Board soon. The firm lost 35000 before taxes last year despite a 12 to 14 percent increase since September 1959. The 10 percent rise covers the Pacific Coast Hawaii service with similar action expected for Hawaii Atlantic Gulf routes. Sevier tied high Hawaii living costs to freight rates.
