Lockheed Wins Major Airlift Contract For 1964
Lockheed will supply the national airlift starting in fall 1964 under a contract with the Air Force. At least 50 percent of work will be subcontracted. Boeing and other rivals competed, with Lockheed chosen as the bidder offering a lower price. The aircraft will be a larger jet version of the Hercules, powered by four turbo fan engines, designed to carry cargo and troops in place of older craft. Employment at Lockheed’s Marietta plant is expected to rise to 11,700–12,000 by mid-1963 from previously planned declines.
