First GI Deserter Returns Home From Sweden
The first U S GI who deserted to Sweden, Pvt Ray Jones of Pontiac Michigan, surrendered to Army officials in Frankfurt after a brief stay in Stockholm. He cited a desire to return to the United States amid his protest over racial discrimination and the Vietnam war. Two other AWOL soldiers who turned themselves in at the U S Embassy in Stockholm and were sent back to Germany reportedly said they were broke and hungry. Jones described Sweden as a free life but said staying would have been a mistake. He was accompanied by his German wife Gabriel and their three month old son.
