Ford budget clash in congressional economic report

In Washington the Democratic majority of the Joint Economic Committee urged a larger deficit to speed recovery toward full employment, opposing Ford’s conservative fiscal plan. They proposed 1977 spending increases of 18 to 24 billion dollars and a near 60 billion dollar deficit, while warning without more stimulative policy the rebound could stall. Aiming to create jobs, they called for public works programs and tax relief, with monetary policy focused on avoiding rising short term rates. Meanwhile a Pasadena department store suffered 1.5 million in damage from a fire, injuring five and prompting evacuations nearby.
