$75 000 Bill Due in Waste Disposal Controversy
The Independent reports Long Beach faces a $75 000 bill for radioactive waste removal supervised by the Atomic Energy Commission. Four truckloads were loaded Friday headed to Idaho, with 50 to 65 trucks needed for the full inland haul. Coastwise Marine Disposal’s license was revoked, forcing inland disposal despite sea dumping aims. AEC says inland disposal is cheaper amid port strike risks. Dowds and Nettleman were locked out of their property tied to the deal, with assurances they can return once cleanup finishes. The AEC maintains a 112‑strong crew in Long Beach operating two shifts.
