Sea Floor Sediments Reached First Time
Drilling from the unanchored ship CUSS OFF SAN DI EGO penetrated over 3,000 feet of ocean sediment, marking a depth record for drill pipe use in water. The operation, part of Operation Mohole sponsored by the National Science Foundation, aims to sample deep ocean layers and extend into earth’s mantle. The effort moves toward Guadalupe Island to probe 12,000 feet of water and deeper earth sections.
