Desertions Rise in U S Forces amid Vietnam War
Senate Armed Services Committee reports 53 357 U S servicemen deserted between mid 1967 and mid 1968 an average of one every 10 minutes and 155 536 went over the hill during fiscal 1968 an average of one every three minutes. Deserters totaled about three and a half 15 000 man divisions. AWOL equals ten 15 000 man divisions. Budgeted sentences appeared lenient with only 250 tried and convicted.
