Unusual Winter Storm Swings Across Plains and South
A westward snowstorm blasted the Great Plains bringing several inches of snow to Leadville and Cheyenne while shutting major transcontinental highways. The system moved into drought-hit Texas Oklahoma Panhandle and Kansas with up to four inches in places and plummeted temperatures southward. Subfreezing air from Canada sent temps below zero in Grantsburg Texas Panhandle and Wisconsin as rain and snow spread from Minnesota to the Carolinas. In Chicago the AFL CIO Switchmen's Union accepted a three-year contract covering about 11,000 rail workers with a 12½ percent wage boost plus two 5-cent raises over two years and holiday pay. Florida suffered heavy rainfall with 7.21 inches in Miami during February, described as the wettest on record. Weather officials warned more rain and cold could arrive from Montana to the Carolinas.
