Gun-control bill shelved in House subcommittee

The House Judiciary Committee sent back a controversial gun-control bill to a subcommittee, crippling efforts to curb firearms this year. The measure would ban concealable handguns, raise dealer licenses, require a 30 day waiting period, and impose mandatory jail terms for gun crimes. NRA official Harlan Carter lauded the move as democracy in action, while supporters lamented the setback. Representative George E. Danielson said concealed short barreled handguns should be handled in subcommittee, not on the floor. The panel has not sent a gun-control bill to the floor since 1968, and Chairman Peter Rocite Jr. could not say if it would be reported out again.
