Nixon Tenure Upsets Rightists Says ACU
Washington conservatives fault President Nixon after six weeks in office for not shaking up the State Department or staff. The American Conservative Union criticizes reliance on former Kennedy and Johnson advisers and opposes Dr. James Allen as Education Commissioner. It likens changes to a new bride in a house full of old furniture and cites Nixon’s staff as under the president’s influence. The group notes Henry Kissinger’s staff includes many liberals and calls Allen’s spending plans excessive. ACU leaders include Rep. John M. Ashbrook and Rep. Albert Watson.
