Powell loses most damages in Powell defamation case
The Court of Appeals threw out most of the money damages owed to Esther James in the defamation suit against Adam Clayton Powell. It ruled Powell need not pay 55,785 dollars and sent parts of the case back to the Manhattan Supreme Court for reconsideration under Puerto Rican law. The ruling leaves about 600 dollars still in dispute and notes that Powell could retain his congressional immunity from arrest for civil contempt, while other issues shift toward a special election to fill his seat. Powell’s salary was terminated, and lawyers plan to seek swift court action to resolve representation and seating questions.
