Tommy Johnson sought to enlist at age 12 writing to the San Diego commandant and received a Marine uniform token. He enlisted on turning 18 and was killed in action September 16. Maj Gen McQueen personally informed his parents in THLEN Minn.
King George VI, 45, rallied in London after Sunday's operation to remove all or part of a lung. He was able to take nourishment and his physicians monitored for infection or further complications that could require more surgery.

Tokyo reports massive aerial battles over Korea on the second day of fighting. Seventy seven American and British jet planes confronted 120 Communist MIG15s in three 600 mile per hour dogfights. Enemy losses included five planes shot down and five damaged. one American plane was damaged yesterday but all US planes returned to base. A total of 197 jet aircraft participated in the day's actions.
The Los Angeles Examiner announced a price rise from 7 to 10 cents on Oct. 1 due to higher newsprint and labor costs. The change will largely benefit vendors and carriers, with daily and Sunday home delivery set at $2.25 per month. Newsprint cost rose from 50 to 116 dollars per ton since 1910.
Washington report says a new pork regulation may cut retail prices by up to a nickel a pound for ham and bacon in some areas. Effective October 1, it requires retailers who have not passed wholesale price cuts to reflect them in consumer prices.
Mrs Nell Irene Jenkins of 12129 Roseton is jailed denying giving drugs to her four year old son Thomas A Watson. Sheriff narcotics agents led by Lt Ray Huber say pills were found in her purse and the boy was taken to a doctor by a neighbor. See BOY, Page 4.
