A twinjet McDonnell Hanshee Fighter failed to hook arresting gear aboard the U S carrier Essex in Korean waters. The crash caused a serious fire, leaving two dead five missing and fifteen injured. The jet bounced across deck, rupturing fuel lines and destroying four parked aircraft while damaging four more.
Supreme Court Justice Douglas urged recognizing Communist China after a two month Asia tour. Senator Connally dismissed the remarks as foolish. The piece notes tense China Korea dynamics and hints at future policy moves, with continued coverage on page 24.
Freelance writer Harold J. Ashe details how the Communist Party infiltrated the film industry to gain respectability through “name persons” and used personable women to recruit sailors and soldiers. An explosion at the Shell Oil refinery in Wood River Illinois caused a raging fire. Four people died and at least twenty eight were burned. Hospital attendants reported many injuries in critical condition and fear the death toll may rise.
In Norwalk a 14 year old boy, Lawrence Barkett of 12715 Tellissier Rd, was wounded on the left toe near the thigh by a .22 calibre bullet at 3 30 pm while playing on a sidewalk near Pico. His brother Thomas, 17, was with him when the shot came from the east from an orange grove about 100 yards away. He was taken to Pico Emergency Hospital then Los Angeles General Hospital for surgery. Police, including Deputy Sheriff A L Hicks, search the grove for clues as the area has seen three prior phantom shootings involving a .22 calibre gun. The boy recovered consciousness quickly after being knocked down. See Phantom Killer Page 4.
Long Beach will wilt under more hot weather after a 90 degree day. The U S Weather Bureau forecasts highs around 85 with lingering low clouds and fog into mid morning. Dense fog yesterday hampered airport operations and harbor ship movements.
