The Long Beach School Board reports 41,973 students on the first day, with City College adding over 10,000 more. Superintendent Newcomb calls the enrollment surge startling, and officials predict over 2,000 more students by month’s end. Totals by level: senior high 6,376. junior high 7,937. elementary 27,460.
The CIO strike across Douglas County shipyards crippled military cargo transport production. Todd and Bethlehem yards halted more than two million dollars in vessel repair and delayed naval work including the destroyer Cowell and other ships. Union official Shapiro cited tool shortages and denial of entry for tool-less workers at Todd prompting the stoppage.
Last week the Board of Supervisors clashed over a state law change now taking effect. Supervisor Ray Darby objected, arguing it is bad business to rent at double or more of the property’s value. He highlighted a potential vicious provision allowing long term public building leases.
The Air Force admitted full responsibility for a Sunday strafing in the Los Cerritos district near Long Beach. A short circuit in F-51 wing gun wiring caused 1575 bullets to rain into homes. no injuries were reported and damages will be compensated. Brig. Gen. Thatcher ordered damage reimbursements as Maj. Queen noted improvements to aircraft wiring checks.
Reports from sources in science suggest the United States still plans a man made moon. A satellite launched into orbit could supply vital military information by electronic relay. Scientists at Yale and Princeton consider the goal possible, with an orbit about 200 miles high and invisible to the eye.
