Cairo proclaimed a state of emergency throughout the city at 6 a.m. today as Egypt braces for possible military action in Suez and the Sudan. Britain rushed preparations for a potential showdown.
President Truman is arranging to spend several weeks at his vacation White House in Key West Florida. The plan was learned today as officials outlined the stay, including dates and accommodations.
A 15 year old Massachusetts baby sitter Roberta McCauley and two school friends were arrested in New York on fugitive charges after stealing $24,000 from a doctor’s home. They spent most of the money on clothes and a Broadway outing, leaving only $71. Accomplices face charges for aiding a minor and alleged theft.
Long Beach plans a global publicity boost with the Miss Universe contest. Private companies support the event, aiming to transform Long Beach into the Atlantic City of the West and attract thousands of tourists year round. San Francisco October 19 The University of California board of regents voted thirteen to ten to rescind the loyalty oath requirement for university employment. In New York on October 19 the five day AFL flongshoremen walkout escalated into a full strike stalling Korea bound ships and forcing trans Atlantic passengers to carry luggage. Brooklyn’s livery pier and most Manhattan docks closed as Jersey workers reportedly joined, halting the nation’s port. Acting Mayor Sharkey asked the Federal Mediation Board to form a panel to probe the walkout described as grave by Cyrus S. Ching. The strike arose from anger over a new contract negotiated by ILSA AFL head Joseph P. Ryan.
U N offers a compromise on the size of attack free corridors between truce camps in Korea. Allied officers propose a 401 meter wide safe zone between Munsan and Kaesong instead of two miles, signaling potential agreement on this point. The remaining obstacle is UN demands for unrestricted flight over the zones without attack.
Detectives investigated the death of a 46 year old tourist found dead in his car parked at the edge of Pacific Coast Highway about a mile north of Seacl Beach. Marvin Wallis of Oklahoma City was discovered at 4 25 p.m. when passers by heard his horn. A stone wedged under the horn rim caused the horn to blow while the car engine ran and the front door was open. Wallis lay on the front floor boards partially disrobed. Papers in the car suggested he might have been en route to San Diego to visit his son at a naval installation there. He was taken to Christensen and Pina Mortuary with no signs of violence.
