Picket Acquitted Of Striking Deputy

A jury in Signal Hill court found Russell W. Johnson innocent of assault and battery charges after an hour of deliberation. The 23 year old Santa Ana resident had been accused of slugging a deputy sheriff with a picket sign during a picket line flare up. Defense witness testimony claimed Johnson did not strike the deputy.

Long Beach Strike Talks Strain On C-124 Plant

Negotiations between Douglas and the UAW extended from 10:15 a.m. to 8:20 p.m with a lunch break as John Livingston of the Wage Stabilization Board joined labor members. A 2:30 p.m. session is planned though progress remained elusive amid an eight month strike that halted C-124 Globemaster II production. The union seeks a 10 percent retroactive raise, a 10 cent hourly bump, reclassification changes and additional benefits.
