Truman to Meet Mac in Pacific for Korea talks

President Truman plans a first face to face meeting with General Douglas MacArthur in the Pacific this week to discuss the final phase of United Nations action in Korea and anti-Communist strategy in Asia. The time and place are not disclosed for security reasons, but the rendezvous will be west of Hawaii. The trip will be brief with a departure onThursday afternoon from St. Louis to join in Hawaii.

Robbery Attempt Involving Young Couple Grilled

A husband and wife, part of a two-couple alleged strongarm gang, were questioned by Long Beach detectives after an attempted purse snatching of Ellen Rodgers at 903 Stanley Ave. Off duty officer Tolman pursued and captured the suspects following a chaotic chase through Long Beach and Signal Hill.

First Cavalry Advances to Yugadong North of 38th Parallel

U S First Cavalry Division broke through enemy lines to Yugadong 12 miles north of the 38th Parallel and 75 miles below Pyongyang as North Korea’s Premier Kim Il Sung urged a fight to the finish. Red resistance was described as nearly nil in the drive though another Cav spearhead faced heavy artillery and mines to the west. Kim rejected MacArthur’s surrender demands and warned of a grave crisis as the army works to rebuild railways and arms production.

Rigid Curbs Put On Home Buying

Washington October 10 government imposes strict credit controls on all new single and two family homes with minimum down payments from 5 to 50 percent. Veterans face lighter terms for lower priced homes while non veterans buying above 20000 must put up half the price. Mortgages must be paid in 20 years, not 25 or 30, likely increasing monthly payments. The move signals a government halt to the postwar home building boom and follows the Korean War period.
