NEW YORK, Nov. 19. The 24 day old telephone strike was settled today. The CIO Communications Workers of America and the Western Electric Co. agreed on a 15 month contract with a 9 to 14 cent an hour wage increase for 17,000 workers who manufacture install and repair telephone equipment. The agreement, pending union approval, followed a marathon 25 hour federal mediation session ending at noon today.

Floods Close Highway 99 and Surrounding Routes
Flood waters in California's Central Valley forced the closure of Highway 99 between Pipton and Tulare with no north south through traffic except via Highway 101. Highway 40 suffered a washout at Cisco and Highway 50 remained closed near Camp Sacramento. Yosemite Valley was cut off as routes 140 41 and Reno to the east were blocked.
