Berlin sources report that Stalin will replace Santa in the Soviet zone of East Germany with public Christmas observances canceled. The interior ministry ordered institutions to celebrate Stalin's birthday on December 21, and schools will enforce the ban on Christmas observances.
The Metropolitan Water District will provide emergency Colorado River water to a 200 square mile drought area southeast of Los Angeles. The region includes Artesia, Hell, Bell Gardens, Maywood, Lakewood, Norwalk, Paramount, Santa Fe Springs, Signal Hill, South Gate, Vernon, Whittier and more. Chairman Joseph Jensen said the plan offers temporary relief until a local municipal district forms.
