St Louis, Nov 11. Thomas C. Hennings Jr., Missouri senator elect and lone Democrat to win a Senate seat, vows independence in Washington. He defeated State Senator Allison in a hard primary to oppose incumbent Donnell, showing coolness toward Truman and pledging nonpartisan service, with a record of shifting positions and New Deal sympathy. He supports repeal of Port-Martley law, foreign policy unity, full preparedness, and veterans’ reform, while opposing socialized medicine.
Joseph D. Elva, 28, of 788 East 1st Street, was booked on suspicion of assault and battery after allegedly striking his elderly landlord George M. Drollinger, owner and manager of the building, following a dispute over a broken mantelpiece in Drollinger’s apartment, police said.
Commercial pilot Floyd Nolta, 49, was critically injured when attempting an emergency landing at Lockheed Air Terminal in Van Nuys. His P-38 crashed into a telephone pole and houses in a residential area. He was treated at Valley Hospital and Cedars of Lebanon Hospital for a compound skull fracture and other injuries.
United States and South Korean forces push toward the Chosin reservoir as UN and Chinese actions escalate. American First Cavalry Division advances north of the Chongchon River while Marine patrols move toward the Chosin hydro electric reservoir. Reports say nine Red divisions may face the First Corps and central Tokchon sector fighting teeth.
Western delegates plan continuous Security Council sessions starting Tuesday to grill the Peiping delegation led by Wu. The move aims to press for clarification on the Korean border dispute as Beijing’s role from the MacArthur charges is challenged, with Formosa considerations deferred pending a vote and possible Soviet veto.
The annual Junior Statesmen of America convention urged an expanded junior college system to provide at least two years of college training for more high school graduates. The resolution notes many cannot afford four years and will be sent to the President's Mid Century Conference on Children and Youth in Washington. The group also called on high schools to model student governments on the American constitution to teach youths about the U S government branches.

Tokyo dispatch reports two Air Force Reserve wings now in combat in Korea. The 452nd Light Bomb Wing from Long Beach and the 437th Troop Carrier Wing from Chicago have been activated and began air operations within days. Brig. Gen. John P. Wenetry commands the 437th, with Lt. Col. Harry W. Jordan as executive officer. The units arrived in Japan last week and trained at George AFB before flying to Korea, transporting supplies and equipment to forward air fields. S/Sgt. Clifford Hubbard, previously a plumber, shot down an enemy plane on his first mission. The 452nd, led by Brig. Gen. Luther W. Sweelser Jr., absorbed personnel from the 448th LW and operated from Victorville before moving to Korea.
A massive blast at the Leduc Hotel in Alberta killed three people and wounded fifteen as fire razed the two story hotel and spread to a neighboring bank. Fire crews from Edmonton aided local volunteers and 42 people were in the hotel at the time.
The case involves a well known New Mexico doctor described as a kidnapper who abducted a 9 year old girl. A ransom note demanded $20,000 or negotiable bonds, promising the child would be cared for but warned against police interference. The child was later found drugged and left in an abandoned ranch house. authorities and the victim’s guardian pursued the ransom and the return of the child.
