Long Beach led national bookmakers in applying for the new fifty dollar occupational tax stamp as six applications were filed. In Los Angeles only one bookie applied while many operators shut down. Downtown Long Beach bars buzzed with bookmakers and their runners though most avoided taking bets. One man said he would stay away until after the new year.
