Reds Battle To Stem New Communist Defense Line

In Tokyo on May 31 Allied units slogged through mud to pressure Red Korea lines around the Iron Triangle. An Eighth Army spokesman said the attack aimed to shield a new six to 12 mile deep Communist defense zone. Heavy fighting raged near Kumhwa Hwachon and Yanggu as armored units probed toward the Kumhwa bastion and the Hwachon reservoir area.

At El Toro Marine Base on May 30 Marines unveiled Douglas Skynight, a long range two seater jet interceptor described as top secret. The aircraft is touted as capable of all weather operation and aims to join active service, potentially in Korea.

Three Sailors Hurt in Crash Near Coast Highway

Three sailors were treated at Seaside Hospital for minor injuries after a car crash on Paol Coast Highway and Anaheim St. Injured were Blaine White 20 from the U S S Alvin C. Cock erill William Keown 23 of the U S S Sperry and Tom Kent 21 of the U S S Ulhmann. They were bound for San Diego where their ships are in port.

12 Die in California Traffic Accidents

Three separate traffic fatalities are reported across California. C. H. Eckles, 59, died crossing the Pacific Coast Highway near Laguna Beach after being struck by a car driven by Perch A. Vrooman, 49, of San Diego. Charles William Harris, 17, a sailor from Cottonwood, was killed by a hit and run driver on Highway 99E about 22 miles south of Red Bluff while hitchhiking to rejoin his ship the U S S Chara. Raymond Lara, 28, of Oakland, and Roy Juarez of Hayward, both passengers, died when Lara’s car was rear struck on the Yolo Causeway near Sacramento while changing a flat. Patrol seeks the hit‑and‑run driver in Harris case. Coroners report details continue on page 5-4.

Five year old Frederic E. Gentry of 2214 West HI Street was struck by a car driven by Ernest Diset of Los Angeles last night. He received treatment for minor injuries at Seaside Hospital.

Memorial Day Beach Crowd Draws 175000 to Long Beach

Lifeguards battled a busy day with 24 rescues including 16 in Colorado Street Lagoon as 173000 Southern Californians flocked to beaches for the largest local Memorial Day turnout. Two 17 year olds from San Bernardino were saved after a raft overturned near Pacific Avenue. Water hit 57.5 degrees. traffic jammed Highway 101 as beachgoers surged toward the sea.
