After a 24 hour lull the Chinese renewed their offensive in the eastern mountain area to exploit gaps in Allied lines. Two new salients were checked by Savagely counterattacking American and South Korean troops. Six Communist assaults were repelled yesterday and two more today by the Second Division as U N infantry formed a new defense line east of Hongchun.

Win Pledge Of Inquiry Into Abuses Sparks Prison Riot
Inmates agreed to end the disturbance after state authorities pledged to investigate complaints against a deputy warden and three prison officers. Six killers were returned to death row, guards were held hostage during the riot, and most inmates returned to cells without further resistance. Assistant Warden James Davis offered to resign. six other officials threatened to quit if he left. One inmate was injured amid the tense riot. others described a rupture as nearly fatal. In Chicago on May 20 a man with a broken arm helped rescue 33 people from a burning apartment building. Dudley Tirschel, 33, a construction worker, saw the blaze and rushed inside to call out most of the tenants despite his injured arm in a sling.
