The weather forecast predicts mostly clear skies for today and tomorrow with clouds in the early mornings. Temperatures are expected to rise to around 84 degrees, bringing warmer conditions and a pleasant weekend. residents are encouraged to enjoy outdoor activities along highways and beaches.
A $1.5 million blaze ripped through a Warner Bros studio lot in Burbank. Sound Stage 21 and numerous outdoor sets were gutted while stars like Burl Lancaster, Steve Cochran, and Ray Bolger joined firefighters. Four people injured slightly, no major casualties, and the fire spread aided by a high wind.
The August 9 1949 editorial warned of potential need to spend hundreds of millions from city titles and oil funds. It urged a program to impound the money with release only for projects approved by voters. The note adds that the Senate approved the bill.
Corpus Christi Texas May 17 a multi million dollar petroleum fire raged out of control after an 80 000 barrel tank ignited and exploded flames towered six hundred feet high as firemen fought the blaze with exhausted foam and withdrew units for more aid from Houston officials feared the blaze would spread along the oil rich Texas Gulf coast and called it farther out of control than overnight.
In Portland on May 16 Oregon results show General Eisenhower leading with 31 353 votes to 7 339 for Warren Kefauver tops the Democratic side with 28 517 for Douglas 4 683 for Stevenson and other GOP contenders including MacArthur Morse Stassen Sehnieter and write ins for Taft in an incomplete tally from 56 of 2269 precincts.
Armed Forces Day events begin today with a 3000 person parade on Ocean Boulevard in downtown Long Beach. Open houses run at Long Beach Air Force Base and Ft. MacArthur San Pedro, plus ship and submarine inspections at Pier 1 Pier A and San Pedro Naval Supply Depot. Combat movies at Los Alamitos, patio picnic and dance, and a Service men’s Club dance round out the day’s military program.
