Norwalk residents mourn Charles Houghton aka Chuck as officials call for a safety drive after a fatal ice box incident. Eight hundred children play daily within 300 feet of the device, highlighting widespread hazard across Norwalk's 40,000 population. Local officials and safety advocates urge immediate action to prevent further tragedy.
A post mortem in Norwalk confirmed the death of Charles Houghton, found in an abandoned ice box near his home, as an accident. Detective chief Insp. Garner Brown said no one harmed the boy and the case remains open while investigators pursue additional angles. Community anger rose after the discovery near Grayland School on Hopland Street, with calls for wider danger-trap searches.
A Senate subcommittee pressed John J. McCloy to explain charges that war materials flow from Western Germany to Communist China through British shipments. The probe accompanies a $431 million supplemental bill to fund the government through July 1 and was backed by a- party line amendment urging sterner administration action. The cable-led request cites possible illegal trade totaling about $1 billion since WWII. Senate action followed rapid approval of the bill by voice vote.

Police arrested Kenneth S. Losh, 23, and Harold Levi Flagg, 20, both of 535 W Third St, after a vice squad cruiser was stolen from Santa Clara Street and W Ocean Ave. Officers found them walking from the abandoned car on Water Street near Berth 48 and booked them on grand theft auto and intoxication.
Gov. Thomas E. Dewey blasted the midn ight dismissal of Gen Do Douglas MacArthur as unwise and shabby and accused the administration of lacking a real policy for the Far East. He backed using Chinese Nationalist troops against the Communists and keeping Formosa free, while opposing going it alone and delaying bombing Manchurian bases.
A six member subcommittee of the Republican National Committee recommended Chicago as the site for the 1952 nominating convention on July 21. Philadelphia delegates urged a renewed drive as the full committee prepared to meet Friday. The Chicago plan required certain conditions and a $258,000 society grant.
