Union Chief Held in Gun Attack on Two Union Leaders

Ralph Smith, 40, UAW CIO chief steward at the General Motors South Gate plant, was arrested in Norwalk for allegedly firing four shots at two international union representatives Lester Teamed, 47, Huntington Park, and Harold Clements, 32, Long Beach Givd. Both escaped unharmed, three shots hit the rear of Clements car but missed occupants. motive tied to long running factional fight within the union.

Reno Area Rocked By Sharp Quake

A sharp earthquake was felt in the Reno area at 8 30 a m today. Professor Vincent P Gianella of the University of Nevada reported the quake centered about 20 miles southwest of Reno in the Sierra Nevada north of Lake Tahoe. The seismograph needle was knocked off the paper by the shock. No damage was reported though workers in Carson City said the quake was so severe that many people ran into the hall of the state Capitol building.

Two Airmen Hurt As Car Strikes City Bus

An auto struck a city bus at First and American early today injuring two airmen identified as Franki Tiuenemen with facial lacerations and Merrill A. Holmes 14 with severe facial cuts. Driver Charles A. Clary 20 escaped with minor leg injuries. Six bus passengers and driver Francis J. Glass 29, plus Loma Avenue resident, were injured.
