Twister Hits Missouri and Illinois Towns in Outburst
A tornado tore a quarter mile wide swath through Farmington Missouri then hit Evansville Illinois about 35 miles away. Another funnel struck Kane Texas injuring at least one person and damaging homes while cutting power and phone lines for hours. The storms also caused snow slides in California and flood threats in the Southwest.

Three Hurt in Ship Blast Aboard freighter SS Howard Olson
San Francisco March 18 Three seamen were seriously injured tonight in an ammonia explosion in the engine room aboard the Olson Steamship Company freighter SS Howard Olson en route from Los Angeles to Coos Bay Oregon. Coast Guard said the vessel was docking at Humboldt Bay to transfer the injured ashore for medical treatment. The blast occurred shortly after dark aboard the freighter operated out of San Francisco.
