Malik Urges Direct Talks to End Korean War

Car Insurance Rates Rise for California Drivers

From San Francisco on June 23 California motorists face higher auto insurance rates due to inflation. The National Bureau of Casualty Underwriters announced effective Monday June 25 a 23.4 percent rise for bodily injury liability and 5.8 percent for property damage coverage.

Sacramento June 23 State Legislature approved a 13 475 000 rise in state school aid ending a 120 day session The Assembly 61 2 Senate 37 0 accepted a conference report adding 300 000 to the Senate version of the bill The total increase includes 1 8 million in basic aid 1 per pupil and adds 1 4 million to the equalization fund for poorer districts and 700 000 for transport of crippled children The session also gave final approval to a giant water power project the largest concrete gravity dam on the Feather River near Oroville with conduits and canals to San Diego The measure marks lawmakers support for the project amid questions over the revised funding and scope.

FBI captures one of ten most wanted fugitives in Portland area

Thomas James Holden, 55, a plasterer near Beaverton Oregon, was arrested by FBI agents as he worked on a house remodel. Holden, charged with the 1949 murder of his wife and her two brothers in Chicago, admitted his identity after fingerprints confirmed it and will waive extradition to Chicago. A caller tipped off the agents after reading Holden’s INS description in The Oregonian. The arrest followed the informant’s tip and a sighting under the alias John R. McCullough.
