Auto Strikes Two Marines Near Mimeno Ave

Two hitchhiking Marines were badly injured late last night when a car struck them on the Pacific Coast near Mimeno Ave. Police had not identified the driver. Marines Chester Hancock, 22, and William Riverbark, 20, of Camp Pendleton were taken to Community Hospital with severe injuries described as horrible. hospital officials said extent was not determined early this morning.

Foreign Queens Here Beauty Pageant Opens in City

European and Middle East contestants arrived at Municipal Airport to compete for the title of Sasa Universe in a week-long world beauty pageant. Escorts photographed the guests as they disembarked from the Pan American Clipper. Claude Godard of Bordeaux, 21, Miss Franco, led the arrivals followed by Miss Urue fuay and other entrants from India, Norway, Denmark, Britain, Belgium, Italy, Turkey, and South Africa.

Couple Adrift Two Days Rescued Off Catalina Island

David Faxon a 21 year old tile setter from Los Angeles and his wife Edith 22 were rescued after 40 hours adrift between Long Beach and Catalina Island. A passing oil tanker spotted the disabled El Poscador and brought the couple aboard ending a Coast Guard search. They had left San Pedro Friday for a pleasure trip carrying water and sandwiches. Engine failure left them drifting. they waved at boats with no response before rescue.

Father Dives And Races in Vain for Aid

Merle E. Tull of Loomis Street Lawood dove into rough water to rescue his daughter Lynda J. Tull after the boat lurched tossing her overboard. He carried her back to the boat but she died en route to Community Hospital with a skull fracture and severe injuries. The family had recently purchased a 19 foot craft and neighbors noted the vessel was used near the outer harbor. Services will be announced by Dilday Mortuary.

Telethon Finances Complete Olympic Trip

Long Beach residents pledged $797 to the United States Olympic Games fund during a 15 hour Hollywood telethon. The national total rose to $1,000,029 far exceeding the amount needed to send the American team to the Olympic Games in Finland. Details on page 24.
