Truman Pledges Tax Hikes Opposes Tax Cuts
President Truman urged raising taxes to cover the fiscal 1952 deficit of about 7.47 billion dollars while criticizing Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower and Sen. Robert A. Taft for promising tax cuts if elected. He warned a 15 percent cut would worsen the hole and noted three tax increases since the Korean War began. He did not rule out taft Hartley use in the steel strike and praised Harriman's DC primary victory for the New Deal Fair Deal stance.
